Goverment Prepares 5 Airports Near Bali Island, Anticipating Flight Disruption

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said the government is preparing five airports to anticipate the disruption of flights at Ngurah Rai International Airport Bali due to increased activity of Mount Agung (Gunung Agung).

"We have prepared the airports around Bali," he told reporters after a dialogue titled the Three-Year Administration of Jokowi and Jusuf Kalla, in Gambuhan Village, Pulosari Sub-District, Pemalang Regency, Central Java, Saturday (23/9).

The minister said the prepared airports are in:

1. Lombok, (Lombok International Airport), West Nusa Tenggara

2. Makassar (Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport), South Sulawesi

3. Banyuwangi (Blimbingsari Airport), East Java

4. Surabaya (Juanda International Airport), East Java

5. Malang (Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport), East Java.

Nevertheless, he hopes Gunung Agung does not erupt so as not to disrupt the flight and tourism sector in Bali.

So far, he said the flight in Bali is still normal despite the increased activity of Gunung Agung.

Earlier, I Gusti Ngurah Rai Bali International Airport management said that flights at the local airport were not affected by the rise in volcanic activity status of Gunung Agung that had become "Warning".

"Until now the flight is still normal," said Head of Public Relations Division of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport Arie Ahsanurrohim in Denpasar, Saturday (23/9).

The Bali airport management makes intensive communications with relevant agencies to monitor the latest conditions, after the rise in volcanic activity status of the mount towering 3,142 meters above sea level.

Previously, Head of Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Kasbani said the status of Gunung Agung in Karangasem rose from "Standby Alert" level (Level III) to "Warning" (Level IV) starting from Friday (9/22) at 8.30 pm of Central Indonesian Time.
