On 24 April, 2019, Japan Airlines (JAL) and Garuda Indonesia (Garuda) announced the expansion of codeshare routes providing customers additional options when traveling between Japan and Indonesia.
Effective May 8, 2019, the two airlines will codeshare on Jakarta - Osaka Kansai and Jakarta - Nagoya Chubu routes operated by Garuda. For domestic flights operated by JAL, the carriers will add codeshare services on the Haneda - Osaka Itami route.
In addition to expanding the codeshare partnership, the carriers will look to enhance their frequent flyer programs and ultimately pursue a joint business structure in their respective market.
Japan Airlines, the first international airline in Japan, today reaches 349 airports in 52 countries and regions together with its codeshare partners with a modern fleet of more than 230 aircraft.
Garuda Indonesia, Indonesia's flag carrier, currently operates 202 aircraft with an average age less than five years. This amount is accommodated by Garuda Indonesia as a main brand with a total of 144 aircraft, and Citilink as a Low Cost Carrier Airline which operates 58 fleet aircraft.
