Martinair Keeps Flying As Air Freight Service Airline
Martinair Holland NV (Martinair) plans to concentrate fully on its air freight activities as per the end of 2011, and to discontinue its passenger service. This concerns a proposed decision by the boards of parent company KLM and Martinair, which was approved by the Supervisory Board of Martinair on 23 September.
The proposed decision is founded on the unique competence in air freight that Martinair has successfully developed over the past decades. Another factor that plays a role is the fact that the airline lacks the scale it would need to make Martinair's passenger service profitable in future. In recent years, the current passenger fleet has been reduced to four Boeing 767s. Thanks to the extensive and successful air freight operations and the thorough reorganisation that took place over the past three years, Martinair will close this financial year in the black.
Martinair will continue flying passengers to and from holiday destinations in the large Caribbean region until the end of 2011. Flights can still be booked to all destinations. The KLM Group will start offering some additional flights within the KLM network, serving routes that are currently operated by Martinair.
As a successful air freight carrier, Martinair will continue its operations within the Air France KLM-Cargo organisation. Martinair currently operates 11 cargo planes from Schiphol: seven MD11s and four Boeing 747 ERFs (from KLM).
Martinair Cargo carries 328.000 tonnes of freight annually, serving 31 destinations. Martinair Cargo enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide as a full-freight carrier, offering unique competences in the transport of perishable and hazardous goods and animals.(martinair/mar)
